ABSTRACT

AIM: To investigate the efficacy and safety of dacryocystorhinostomy(DCR)through nasal endoscope with extended bone window and high ostomy in the treatment of chronic dacryocystitis.METHODS: Retrospective clinical study. A total of 50 patients(59 eyes)diagnosed with chronic dacryocystitis in our hospital from January 2018 to January 2020 were selected. They were divided into two groups according to the operation method, with 23 cases(29 eyes)in the simple stoma group and 27 cases(30 eyes)in the improved group. Patients in the simple stoma group were treated with transnasal endoscopic flat middle turbinate axillary DCR(simple stoma), and patients in the improved group were treated with transnasal endoscopic extended bone window with high-level stoma DCR. The total clinical efficiency, postoperative complication rate and satisfaction of the two groups were compared.RESULTS: The effective rate of the simple stoma group was 79% at 12mo after surgery, while that of the improved group was 97%(P=0.039). The total incidence of complications in the simple stoma group was 28%, while that in the improved group was 7%(P=0.042). The satisfaction rate of the simple stoma group was 65%, while that of the improved group was 93%(P=0.030).CONCLUSION: The treatment of chronic dacryocystitis with transnasal endoscopic extended bone window and high-level ostomy DCR further improved the efficiency of surgery and reduced the incidence of complications.

ABSTRACT

Background@#Information on the effectiveness of nirmatrelvir/ritonavir against the omicron is limited. The clinical response and viral kinetics to therapy in the real world need to be evaluated. @*Methods@#Mild to moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients with risk factors for severe illness were prospectively enrolled as a treatment group with nirmatrelvir/ritonavir therapy versus a control group with supportive care. Serial viral load and culture from the upper respiratory tract were evaluated for seven days, and clinical responses and adverse reactions were evaluated for 28 days. @*Results@#A total of 51 patients were analyzed including 40 in the treatment group and 11 in the control group. Faster symptom resolution during hospitalization (P= 0.048) was observed in the treatment group. Only minor adverse reactions were reported in 27.5% of patients. The viral load on Day 7 was lower in the treatment group (P = 0.002). The viral culture showed a positivity of 67.6% (25/37) vs. 100% (6/6) on Day 1, 0% (0/37) vs. 16.7 (1/6) on Day 5, and 0% (0/16) vs. 50.0% (2/4) on Day 7 in the treatment and control groups, respectively. @*Conclusions@#Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir against the omicron was safe and resulted in negative viral culture conversion after Day 5 of treatment with better symptomatic resolution.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To compare the clinical efficacy of conbercept and aflibercept in the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration(wARMD)based on 4 consecutive intravitreal injections.METHODS: The clinical data of 108 patients(108 eyes)who were diagnosed as wARMD and treated with intravitreal injection at our hospital from January 2019 to January 2021 were retrospectively analyzed. They were divided into conbercept group(54 cases, 54 eyes)and aflibercept group(54 cases, 54 eyes)according to the different injectable drugs. All patients received intravitreal injection once a month, with four consecutive injections. Follow up for 12mo to observe best corrected visual acuity(BCVA), central macular thickness(CMT), complications and recurrence before and after injection.RESULTS: BCVA and CMT of patients in the two groups at 1, 2, 5 and 8mo after injection had no between-group differences(P>0.05), but both were significantly improved compared with those before injection(P<0.05). By the end of follow-up, conjunctival hemorrhage occurred in 2 eyes of the conbercept group at the early stage, and increased intraocular pressure and conjunctival hemorrhage occurred respectively in 2 eyes of the aflibercept group. There were no serious complications related to drug injection such as retinal detachment, complicated cataract, endophthalmitis and retinal pigment epithelial tear in the two groups, and there was no difference in the recurrence rate between the two groups(7% vs. 6%, P=1.000).CONCLUSION: On the basis of continuous 4 times of intravitreal injection, both conbercept and aflibercept are safe and effective in the treatment of wARMD, and the efficacy is even.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous spheroid culture is a novel three-dimensional (3D) culture strategy for the rapid and efficient selection of progenitor cells. The objectives of this study are to investigate the pluripotency and differentiation capability of spontaneous spheroids from alveolar bone-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (AB-MSCs); compare the advantages of spontaneous spheroids to those of mechanical spheroids; and explore the mechanisms of stemness enhancement during spheroid formation from two-dimensional (2D) cultured cells. METHODS: AB-MSCs were isolated from the alveolar bones of C57BL/6 J mice. Spontaneous spheroids formed in low-adherence specific culture plates. The stemness, proliferation, and multi-differentiation capacities of spheroids and monolayer cultures were investigated by reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), immunofluorescence, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and oil-red O staining. The pluripotency difference between the spontaneous and mechanical spheroids was analyzed using RT-qPCR. Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIFs) inhibition experiments were performed to explore the mechanisms of stemness maintenance in AB-MSC spheroids. RESULTS: AB-MSCs successfully formed spontaneous spheroids after 24 h. AB-MSC spheroids were positive for MSC markers and pluripotency markers (Oct4, KLF4, Sox2, and cMyc). Spheroids showed higher Ki67 expression and lower Caspase3 expression at 24 h. Under the corresponding conditions, the spheroids were successfully differentiated into osteogenic and adipogenic lineages. AB-MSC spheroids can induce neural-like cells after neurogenic differentiation. Higher expression of osteogenic markers, adipogenic markers, and neurogenic markers (NF-M, NeuN, and GFAP) was found in spheroids than in the monolayer. Spontaneous spheroids exhibited higher stemness than mechanical spheroids did. HIF-1α and HIF-2α were remarkably upregulated in spheroids. After HIF-1/2α-specific inhibition, spheroid formation was significantly reduced. Moreover, the expression of the pluripotency genes was suppressed. CONCLUSIONS: Spontaneous spheroids from AB-MSCs enhance stemness and pluripotency. HIF-1/2α plays an important role in the stemness regulation of spheroids. AB-MSC spheroids exhibit excellent multi-differentiation capability, which may be a potent therapy for craniomaxillofacial tissue regeneration.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#Deodeok (Codonopsis lanceolata) is generally used in conventional medicines and is considered to have remedial properties to cure several diseases. However, application of the C. lanceolata bud as a novel food ingredient has not been fully explored. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is associated with the production of oxidative damage that results in mutagenesis, carcinogenesis, and cell death. This study examines the neuroprotective effect of C. lanceolata bud extracts (CLBE) on H2O2 -stimulated apoptosis in SH-SY5Y cells. @*Methods@#C. lanceolata bud of length 10 to 15 cm was collected and extracted using 70% ethanol. Cytotoxicity was evaluated by the EZ-cytox reagent, measurement of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) release and reactive oxygen species (ROS). The morphological changes of the nuclei were determined using the Hoechst 33258 dye. Enzyme activities were analyzed using the caspase activity assay kit. Related protein expressions were quantified by the Western blot immunoassay in H2O2 -stimulated SH-SY5Y cells. @*Results@#Cell viability, LDH release and ROS generation, demonstrated neuroprotective effects of CLBE in H2O2-stimulated SH-SY5Y cells. The occurrence of apoptosis in H2O2-stimulated cells was confirmed by caspase activity, which was increased in H2O2-stimulated SH-SY5Y cells compared to the unexposed group. Pretreatment of CLBE was observed to inhibit the H2O2–stimulated apoptosis. In addition, exposure to CLBE resulted in increased expression of the Bcl-2 (B cell lymphoma 2) protein and decreased expression of the Bax (Bcl2 associated X) protein. @*Conclusion@#This study shows that exposure to CLBE alleviates the H2O2-stimulated neuronal damage in SH-SY5Y cells. Our results indicate the potential application of CLBE in neurodegenerative disease therapy or prevention.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES@#Complementary and alternative medicines can be used to alleviate climacteric symptoms that significantly affect the quality of life of postmenopausal women. Isoflavones are the most common plant-based therapies for postmenopausal changes, but the results of previous studies have been controversial.MATERIALS/METHODS: To investigate whether isoflavones would affect menopausal symptoms as well as ovarian hormones, we performed a systematic review and metaanalysis. The PubMed and EMBASE databases were used to perform the systematic search.Included studies were limited to randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the impact of isoflavone supplementation on menopausal symptoms. @*RESULTS@#Eleven studies were included for the final quantitative assessment. Isoflavone intervention was varied between 49.3 and 135 mg of isoflavones per day for 12 wk–2 yrs.The meta-analysis showed that supplementation of isoflavones significantly increased the estradiol levels (standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.615, P = 0.035) and Kupperman index (SMD = 3.121, P = 0.003) but had no significant effect on hot flashes, folliclestimulating hormone, and luteinizing hormone. However, both estradiol and the Kupperman index showed significant heterogeneity among studies (I2 = 94.7%, P < 0.001 and I2 = 98.1%, P < 0.001, respectively). @*CONCLUSIONS@#Although the results showed a significant SMD in estradiol and the Kupperman index, the results should be interpreted with caution due to the high heterogeneity. Further validation with a larger RCT will be necessary. Overall, isoflavone supplementation has distinct effects on the climacteric symptoms and hormonal changes in postmenopausal women.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#The ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale) is widely cultivated as a spice for its aromatic and pungent components. One of its constituents, 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) is usually thought to cross the cell membrane through dopamine uptake transporters, and induce inhibition of mitochondrial respiration and the generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). This study examines the neuroprotective effect and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity of fermented ginger extracts (FGEs) on 6-OHDA induced toxicity in SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells. @*Methods@#Ginger was fermented using 2 species of Bacillus subtilis, with or without enzyme pretreatment. Each sample was extracted with 70% ethanol. Neurotoxicity was assessed by applying the EZ-Cytox cell viability assay and by measuring lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) release. Morphological changes of apoptotic cell nuclei were observed by Hoechst staining. Cell growth and apoptosis of SH-SY5Y cells were determined by Western blotting and enzyme activity analysis of caspase-3, and AChE enzymatic activity was determined by the assay. @*Results@#In terms of cell viability and LDH release, exposure to FGE showed neuroprotective activities against 6-OHDA stimulated stress in SH-SY5Y cells. Furthermore, FGE reduced the 6-OHDA-induced apoptosis, as determined by Hoechst staining. The occurrence of apoptosis in 6-OHDA treated cells was confirmed by determining the caspase-3 activity. Exposure to 6-OHDA resulted in increased caspase-3 activity of SH-SY5Y cells, as compared to the unexposed group. However, pre-treatment with FGE inhibited the activity of caspase-3. The neuroprotective effects of FGE were also found to be caspase-dependent, based on reduction of caspase-3 activity. Exposure to FGE also inhibited the activity of AChE induced by 6-OHDA, in a dose-dependent manner. @*Conclusion@#Taken together, our results show that FGE exhibits a neuroprotective effect in 6-OHDA treated SH-SY5Y cells, thereby making it a potential novel agent for the prevention or treatment of neurodegenerative disease.

ABSTRACT Objective The purpose of the study is to quantitatively assess shear-wave elastography (SWE) value in American College of Radiology Thyroid Imaging Reporting and Data Systems (ACR TI-RADS) 4. Materials and methods One hundred and fifty-two ACR TI-RADS 4 thyroid nodules undergoing SWE were included in the study. The mean (EMean), minimum (EMin) and maximum (EMax) of SWE elasticity were measured. Results The areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for SWE EMean, EMin and EMax in detecting benign and malignant nodules were 0.95, 0.83 and 0.84, respectively. Cut-off value of EMean ≤ 23.30 kPa is able to downgrade the lesion category to ACR TI-RADS 3 and cut-off value of EMean ≥ 52.14 kPa is able to upgrade the lesion category to ACR TI-RADS 5. Conclusions The EMean of SWE will probably identify nodules that have a high potential for benignity in ACR TI-RADS 4. It may help identify and select benign nodules while reducing unnecessary biopsy of benign thyroid nodules.

ABSTRACT

Purpose@#We aimed to compare two different sedation protocols for brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in preterm infants. One protocol used chloral hydrate (CH) with monitoring conducted by non-anesthesiologists, and the other used a continuous infusion of propofol (PF) with monitoring by anesthesiologists. @*Methods@#A total of 250 preterm infants born between January 2011 and December 2015 who received brain MRI during hospitalization in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) were included in this retrospective study. In period 1, sedation for brain MRI was done using a single dose or multiple doses of CH with monitoring conducted by NICU medical staff. In period 2, an anesthesiologist prescribed a continuous infu­sion of PF and titrated the dosage for minimal and adequate sedation. Data on the adverse events, including desaturation and bradycardia, were collected and compared between periods 1 and 2. @*Results@#Despite similar gestational ages of the patients in periods 1 and 2, the infants in period 1 showed a higher risk of developing bradycardia after sedation compared to those in period 2 (30.2% vs. 14.8%; an adjusted odds ratio of 2.35; 95% confidence interval of 1.12 to 4.91). Infants who had an adverse event after sedation had a lower gestational age and corrected age at the time of MRI (26.8 weeks vs. 27.9 weeks, P=0.004; 37.3 weeks vs. 38.3 weeks, P=0.023). The duration of MRI was significantly longer in infants that had an adverse event than those that did not (70.9 minutes vs.64.3 minutes). After adju­sting for various clinical factors, lower gestational age, lower corrected age at the time of MRI, and period 1 increased the risk of developing adverse events after sedation for MRI. @*Conclusion@#The use of a continuous PF infusion with dose titration and monitoring by an anesthesiologist is safe and feasible as a sedation protocol for brain MRI in prematurely born infants.

Objective: The expression of CD30 in peripheral lymphoma T cell lymphoma,unspecified (PTCL-U) was analyzed, and the correlations between CD30 and clinical survival and prognosis were studied. Methods: The clinical and pathological indicators of 56 patients with PTCL-U, who were newly treated in The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from January 2013 to December 2017, were obtained. Among the 56 patients, the male to female ratio was 1.7∶1. The median age was 60 (16?76) years. The categorical variables were analyzed by the Chi-square test. Kaplan-Meier method was used for the survival analysis along with an assessment of the differences by Log-rank test. Logistic univariate analysis and Cox multivariate regression model analysis were used to analyze the indicators affecting survival. Results: The 3-year and 5-year overall survival (OS) rates of 56 patients were 42.2% and 20.4%, respectively, and the progression-free survival (PFS) rates were 32.1% and 17.8%, respectively. The median overall survival (median-OS, mOS) was 31 months, and the median progression-free survival (median-PFS, mPFS) was 11 months. The positive expression rate of CD30 in PTCL-U patients was 35.7%. The positive expression of CD30 was more common in advanced patients. The LDH level was increased, and the number of extra-nodal lesions was≥2 in the middle-high risk patients. Further, the initial treatment effects in the positive patients were not good (P<0.05). Among the 56 patients, CHOP regimen and GDPT regimen were adopted for chemotherapy, and the two regimens showed no statistically significant effects on OS and PFS (P>0.05). The survivals in the CD30 positive and negative groups were as follows: the 3 years-OS were 16.5% and 54.9%, respectively (P=0.001); and the 3-years PFS were 11.2% and 44.5%, respectively (P=0.016). The univariate analysis showed that advanced disease, CD30-positivity, IPI/aaIPI-high risk, and PIT-high risk (P>0.05) were adverse prognostic factors. The multivariate analysis showed that staging and PIT were correlated with survival. Conclusions: The expression of CD30 in PTCL-U was low, and the prognosis of the positive-expression group was poor. The positive expression was more associated with advanced disease, high level of LDH, and medium-high risk group. The positive group was more prone to extranodal involvement and the objective remission rate was lower. Staging, CD30, IPI/aaIPI, and PIT could affect the prognosis in these patients.

@#The first case of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in the Republic of Korea was confirmed in May 2015 after a traveller returned from the Middle East. There were 186 cases, including 38 deaths, within two months. The potential of a single MERS-confirmed patient to result in such a large MERS outbreak constitutes a serious global health concern.

ABSTRACT

Cirsium japonicum belongs to the Asteraceae or Compositae family and is a medicinal plant in Asia that has a variety of effects, including tumour inhibition, improved immunity with flavones, and antidiabetic and hepatoprotective effects. Silymarin is synthesized by 4-coumaroyl-CoA via both the flavonoid and phenylpropanoid pathways to produce the immediate precursors taxifolin and coniferyl alcohol. Then, the oxidative radicalization of taxifolin and coniferyl alcohol produces silymarin. We identified the expression of genes related to the synthesis of silymarin in C. japonicum in three different tissues, namely, flowers, leaves, and roots, through RNA sequencing. We obtained 51,133 unigenes from transcriptome sequencing by de novo assembly using Trinity v2.1.1, TransDecoder v2.0.1, and CD-HIT v4.6 software. The differentially expressed gene analysis revealed that the expression of genes related to the flavonoid pathway was higher in the flowers, whereas the phenylpropanoid pathway was more highly expressed in the roots. In this study, we established a global transcriptome dataset for C. japonicum. The data shall not only be useful to focus more deeply on the genes related to product medicinal metabolite including flavolignan but also to study the functional genomics for genetic engineering of C. japonicum.

A sero-epidemiological survey was performed in 1,610 contacts (average duration from exposure to test, 4.8 months), and the collected sera were tested using an enzyme-linked immunespecific assay (ELISA), immunofluorescence assay (IFA), and plaque reduction neutralization antibody test (PRNT). Among the 1,610 contacts, there were 7 ELISA-positive cases, of which 1 exhibited positive IFA and PRNT results.RESULTS: The asymptomatic infection rate was 0.060% (95% confidence interval, 0.002 to 0.346). The asymptomatic MERS case was a patient who had been hospitalized with patient zero on the same floor of the hospital at the same time. The case was quarantined at home for 2 weeks after discharge, and had underlying diseases, including hypertension, angina, and degenerative arthritis.CONCLUSIONS: The asymptomatic infection was acquired via healthcare-associated transmission. Thus, it is necessary to extend serologic studies to include inpatient contacts who have no symptoms.

The case was quarantined at home for 2 weeks after discharge, and had underlying diseases, including hypertension, angina, and degenerative arthritis.@*CONCLUSIONS@#The asymptomatic infection was acquired via healthcare-associated transmission. Thus, it is necessary to extend serologic studies to include inpatient contacts who have no symptoms.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to examine the environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) exposure at home and associated problem behaviors in Korean children and adolescents. METHODS: Approximately 2,167 children aged 3–18 years were included in the study after excluding 163 active smokers from the Korean Environmental Health Survey in Children and Adolescents (2012–2014). ETS data were obtained using a questionnaire; problem behaviors were measured using the Child Behavior Checklist administered to parents. The relationship between ETS exposure and problem behavior was evaluated using a survey regression model adjusted for region, age, sex, income, and father's education. The population-attributable fraction (PAF%) was calculated based on problem behaviors related to ETS exposure at home. RESULTS: The rates of ETS exposure at home were 20%, 28%, and 39% in children aged 3–5, 6–11, and 12–18 years, respectively; ETS exposure at home was associated with behavioral problems: the exposed group having higher total behavioral problem score (95% confidence interval [CI]) than the non-exposed by 2.46 (0.60–4.32) and 2.74 (0.74–4.74) in children aged 6–11 and 12–18 years, respectively, with no significant association in those aged 3–5 years. The PAF% (95% CI) of total problem behaviors for ETS exposure at home were 2.68 (−10.11–17.78), 10.66 (3.25–17.55), and 11.62 (3.03–18.96) in children aged 3–5, 6–11, and 12–18 years, respectively. Children with externalizing problems had higher PAF% than those with internalizing problems. CONCLUSION: In Korea, ETS exposure at home is associated with problem behaviors in children and adolescents with about more than 10% population attributable fraction.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE Although it is generally believed that nicotine accounts for the beneficial effect of smoking on ulcerative colitis, the underlying mechanisms remain not well- understood. Our previous finding that nicotine inhibits inflammatory responses through inducing miRNA-124 prompted us to ask whether the miRNA is involved in the protective action of nicotine on UC. METHODS MiR-124 expression in colon tissues and cells was determined by q-PCR and in situ hybridization. The effect of miR-124 on protective role of nicotine in ulcerative colitis was evaluated in DSS-treated mice and IL-6-treated Caco-2 colon epithelial cells. Expression of p-STAT3/STAT3 was detected by immuno?histochemistry and Western blot analysis. RESULTS miR- 124 expression is upregulated in colon tissues from patients and DSS- induced colitis. Nicotine treatment further elevated miR- 124 level in colon tissues of the mice, in infiltrated lymphocytes and epithelial cells, and augmented miR- 124 expression in lymphocytes isolated from human ulcerative colon tissues. Administration of nicotine also reduced weight loss, improved DAI and decreased HE score in DSS-induced colitis. Moreover, knock?down of miR-124 in vivo significantly diminished the beneficial effect of nicotine, and in vitro on IL-6-treated Caco-2 colon epithelial cells. Further analysis indicated that nicotine inhibited STAT3 activation in vivo and in IL-6-treated Caco-2 colon epithelial cells and Jurkat human T lymphocytes, in which miR-124 knockdown led to increased activation of STAT3. CONCLUSION These data indicated that nicotine exerts its protective action in UC through inducing miR-124 and its effect on STAT3, suggesting that the miR-124/STAT3 system is a potential target for the therapeutic intervention of UC.

ABSTRACT

Stem cell therapies are administered during the acute phase of stroke to preserve the penumbral tissues from ischemic injury. However, the effect of repeated cell therapy during the acute phase remains unclear. In this study, we investigated and compared the functional outcome of single (two days post-injury) and repeated (two and nine days post-injury) treatment with human umbilical cord derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUCB-MSCs) after middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). The rotarod and limb placement tests were utilized to investigate functional outcomes, while infarct volume and tissue damage were measured by immunofluorescent staining for neovascularization, neurogenesis, apoptosis, and inflammation in the penumbral zones. We observed notable motor dysfunction and a significant decrease in infarcted brain volume, as well as increases in neurons and vessels in both single and repeated hUCB-MSC treatments compared to the control group. Interestingly, repeated administration of hUCB-MSCs was not found to elicit additional or synergistic improvements over monotherapy. This study suggests that a clearer understanding of the therapeutic window after stroke will facilitate the development of more efficient treatment protocols in the clinical application of stem cell therapy.

ABSTRACT We retrospectively evaluated the records of 49 grade 4 and 5 patients with 42 intracranial aneurysms treated within 72 h of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). In total, 35 patients (71%) were grade 4, and 14 (29%) were grade 5. A total of 42 (85%) patients had one aneurysm, 6 (12%) had two aneurysms, and 1 (3%) had three aneurysms. Out of 49 patients, one technical (2%) and one clinical (2%) complication occurred at surgery. Twenty-one (43%) patients recovered well, including 7 with postoperative hematoma requiring an immediate evacuation of a clot. Fourteen (29%) patients had hydrocephalus and required a ventriculo-peritoneal shunt; 12 patients underwent tracheotomy postoperatively due to coma and pulmonary infection. We found that patients with Hunt and Hess grade 4 and 5 aneurysms can undergo successful neurosurgical clipping of the aneurysms after SAH. However, the morbidity and mortality rates remain high because of their poor clinical condition and a high incidence of vasospasm during treatment.


RESUMO Avaliamos retrospectivamente os registros de 49 pacientes com 42 aneurismas intracranianos de graus 4 e 5, tratados nas primeiras 72 horas após uma hemorragia subaracnóidea (HSA). Trinta e cinco pacientes (71%) apresentavam grau 4 e catorze (29%) grau 5. Quarenta e dois pacientes (85%) tinham um único aneurisma, seis (12%) tinham dois aneurismas, e um paciente (3%) tinha três aneurismas. Dos 49 pacientes, uma complicação técnica (2%) e uma complicação clínica (2%) ocorreram durante a cirurgia. Vinte e um pacientes (43%) recuperaram-se bem, incluindo sete que tiveram hematomas pós-operatórios que requereram a imediata evacuação do coágulo. Catorze pacientes (29%) tiveram hidrocefalia e submeteram-se à derivação ventrículo-peritoneal; doze pacientes submeteram-se à traqueostomia no pós-operatório, devido a coma e infecção pulmonar. Pacientes com aneurismas de graus 4 e 5, segundo a escala de Hunt & Hess podem submeter-se com sucesso à clipagem dos aneurismas após HSA. Entretanto, as taxas de morbidade e mortalidade ainda são altas, devido à condição clínica precária e à alta incidência de vasoespasmo durante o tratamento.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate the characteristics of language profiles according to whether or not Korean children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD) also have ADHD, and to examine the relationship with executive function. METHODS: Participants in the study were boys with ADHD aged 6 to 11 years who visited the clinic from January 2012 to December 2013. In this study, 25 boys with ASD were included, and completed scales included the Korean version of Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised(K-ADI-R), Korean version of Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule(K-ADOS), Korean ADHD Rating Scale(K-ARS), and Korean-Conners' Parent Rating Scale(K-CPRS). They also completed neuropsychological tests and assessed language profiles. Patients were categorized into two groups(with ADHD and without ADHD). T-test and Multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) was used for analysis. RESULTS: Statistically, no difference was found in receptive and expressive language ability between the ASD groups with and without ADHD. However, a lower score in Test of Problem solving(TOPS) was observed for ASD with ADHD than for ASD without ADHD, with problem solving and finding cues showing significant differences. CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that language profiles in the ASD group without ADHD could be similar to those in the ASD group with ADHD, but comorbid ADHD could lead to more difficulty in linguistic ability for problem solving and could be related with executive function of the frontal lobe.
